Memphis Depay’s big move to Manchester United can be best described as turbulent so far.
The Dutch winger has managed to show flashes of his raw talent, and has 4 goals and 4 assists in just 13 appearances.
Unfortunately these statistics have been overshadowed by some very poor performances and his tendency to shoot (unsuccessfully) from range.
There’s no doubt that he will become an incredible player, but he clearly needs some time to settle in and get used to the Premier League.
The Southampton manager, Ronaldo Koeman has not only stated that he thinks that Memphis Depay will overcome this difficult period, but that he also tried to sign the Dutch winger.
Speaking at a St. Mary’s BBC event, Koeman said:
“It is true, we were interested in Memphis Depay last year but we heard from his management that he wanted to stay one more year in Holland and then take the opportunity to play for a foreign club.”
“I think Memphis Depay, now at the moment, has a difficult time but that’s normal because he is 21 and of course maybe the step to Manchester United in all aspects is a difficult one and he needs more time.”
“If one day he will be on the market, I’m interested yes but I don’t think so because I believe in that player.”
“It is a difficult time but [he is] still young. He has to improve a lot and he will go through all these difficult moments.”
Memphis Depay was left on the bench in Manchester United’s weekend win over Everton, but this was said, by Louis van Gaal, to be because he needed to recover from the disappointment of failing to qualify for the Euros, with the Netherlands.
