Carlo Ancelotti has lifted the lid on why he decided not to replace Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United.
The Italian was approached by the legendary United boss in 2013 with a view to taking over from him at Old Trafford.
Ferguson's charm offensive included taking next season's Bayern Munich manager for a slap-up meal in Paris and treating him to some 'really expensive' win.
However, Ancelotti said he could not turn down the opportunity he had been offered to take charge of Real Madrid.
“I had already spoken to Real Madrid,” he told the Times.
“For the experience, a manager has to go to Madrid. If it hadn’t been for that, I would have come, 100 per cent.”
The job eventually fell to Everton manager David Moyes, who lasted just ten months before being sacked and replaced by Louis van Gaal.
Ancelotti was reportedly sounding out about replacing the Dutch coach this season, but will replace Pep Guardiola at the Allianz Arena instead.
As he prepares for a new challenge in Germany, the veteran coach is proud of his career despite having been given the boot at Chelsea and Real Madrid in recent years.
“There is no manager in their career that is not sacked," he said.
"Ferguson was sacked, [Marcello] Lippi sacked, [Fabio] Capello sacked, [Jose] Mourinho sacked, [Rafa] BenÃtez.
"The only one not sacked is Guardiola, but he’s still really young. He has plenty of time. One day he will come into our club, the Sack Club.”
