Mourinho could be appointed as the United boss if Van Gaal fails to finish in the top four.
When asked if United struggling to achieve Champions League qualification would affect his future, he told the Daily Mail: "There is plenty of time."
Mourinho arrived in Mexico City on Tuesday night to manage a FIFA legends team but he isn't taking the task seriously.
He added: "I didn’t pick them, I’m here on my holidays."
Mourinho has been out of a job since before Christmas when he was axed by Chelsea after a disappointing start to the season.
Since then he has been constantly linked with the United job despite Van Gaal having a contract until the summer of 2017.
And according to the BBC, the Portuguese boss has shown a keen interest in replacing the Dutchman at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils only chance of a top four finish is if they win and arch-rivals Manchester City lose to Swansea.
After that they face Crystal Palace at Wembley in the FA Cup final.
