The Portuguese has been out of employment for six months following his dismal start to the campaign with Chelsea but is being lined up to work in a partnership at Old Trafford
Louis van Gaal is set to be offered a director of football position at Manchester United in a move that would enable Jose Mourinho to take over a managerial role in 2017-18, according to The Sun.
The pair have previous experience working together during their time at Barcelona in the late 1990s, while United vice chairman Ed Woodward remains determined to use the Dutchman's vast experience to the club's advantage.
Meanwhile, Mourinho has reportedly turned down offers from opposing clubs in order to take over the reins at Old Trafford after being sacked by Chelsea for the second time in December.
