Giroud: I Wasnt Good Enough For Arsenal Eleven

Giroud: Why Wenger's decision to bench me was a good move

Olivier Giroud admits Arsene Wenger’s decision to bench him at the beginning of the season was a wake-up call.

The 29-year-old started Arsenal’s first three games of the campaign but then struggled to cement his place in the side ahead of Theo Walcott.

Giroud was booed off in France’s 2-1 win over Serbia in September and the striker believes Wenger’s call to drop him from the side was a positive one.

"He chose to put me on the bench when I came back from Bordeaux [after France’s win over Serbia]. Maybe he thought I needed to be less under pressure," Giroud told Le Parisien.

"We spoke about it. He told me he trusted me, like he did Theo Walcott, but that we were two different players. It was also a tactical choice.

"I understood the coach's tactical choice, but after four games, I needed to turn things around.

"I told myself, 'I can't let this last'. It wasn't good for me, for the national team or for the Euros. I didn't want to spend the whole season on the bench. It made me react."

Klopp An Unlucky Man In Cup Finals

Jurgen Klopp said he has never been on the lucky side of a wrong decision in a final after his Liverpool team lost 3-1 to Sevilla in the Europa League final on Wednesday. In his post-match news conference, Klopp was asked by a German reporter for his thoughts on Andujar Coke's second goal after the referee overruled his linesman on an offside call. Replays later showed that the ball had clearly come off Philippe Coutinho into the attacker's path but Klopp said it was the first time had ever seen a referee overrule his linesman. "I've had a lot of games as a coach but it is not that often that a referee overrules the linesman," the German said. "But right after the match someone said it was the right decision because Coutinho has played the pass." Klopp said he felt like he never had luck in finals, having seen at least two penalty appeals waved away in the first half. "You speak German so I guess you've seen some finals...
